Barcelona express interest in Spanish international to solve midfield problems

After Hansi Flick arrived, Barcelona seemed to have temporarily halted their chase of Guido Rodriguez. In addition, the midfielder’s contract with the team ended on May 31.

However, Barcelona has turned its attention away from the Argentine and onto other options available in the market, such as Valencia sensation Javi Guerra, rather than attempting to reach a new deal with him.

Interest in Mikel Merino from Barcelona
But Barcelona is now considering other midfield possibilities besides Guerra and Rodriguez.

Gianluigi Longari claims that Mikel Merino is regarded highly by the Catalans, and the Real Sociedad player is one of the team’s possible midfield targets.

Because of his positional abilities and play-making ability in the middle of the park, Merino, who was formerly with Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United, has established himself as one of the greatest defensive midfielders in Spain.

Merino, who is 27 years old, has played football at the top level in England, Germany, and Spain. Notably, he has 20 caps for his country and almost 200 La Liga matches to his belt.

Is Merino affordable for Barcelona?
Merino is a desirable target for Barcelona due to his experience as well as his technical and leadership skills.

Merino paid merely €12 million to sign with Real Sociedad in 2018. However, since then, his worth has increased dramatically, and the midfield player will probably cost more than €30 million.

But there are a few things that Barcelona may benefit from. First of all, Merino’s contract expires in 2025, therefore Real Sociedad may have to take the chance of losing the player for free the following season if they are unable to sell him this summer.

As a result, Real Sociedad may come under pressure to offload their midfield player in the upcoming summer. In light of this, Barcelona may become a viable option, albeit a lot would rely on how much La Liga is willing to give the Catalan team this summer.
