Barcelona could make a mistake by signing another underwhelming veteran free agent

Barcelona wants to focus on strengthening their defensive midfield in the summer 2024 transfer window, as the icon Sergio Busquets—who is currently with Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer—was not adequately replaced by Oriol Romeu, a move from Girona.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is the primary target for defensive midfield, although the Spanish international is hesitant to leave San Sebastian in 2024.

Joshua Kimmich, a German international, has been linked to Barcelona as a dream addition for their defensive midfield. The German international has had enough of Bayern Munich’s mishandling of his midfield play and has moved on to other teams.

Barcelona may choose to sign Kimmich or Zubimendi as their new number six, and then add a cheap backup to assist give depth behind them.

Because of this, Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City is reportedly of interest to the Blaugrana. Ndidi is a 27-year-old Nigerian defensive midfielder, and his contract expires at the conclusion of the 2023–2024 season.

When Leicester was one of the best teams in the Premier League, Ndidi was one of the most sought-after names on the transfer market; however, the Foxes have fallen from glory and are currently in the Championship.

Ndidi was formerly being considered by Real Madrid, Barcelona’s longtime rivals, as a backup to Casemiro, the world’s greatest pure defensive midfield player. How times have evolved.

Despite his five assists in the Championship, Ndidi, who is still in the prime of his career, has had less of an influence on defence overall with 1.4 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game.

Ndidi is a free agent, but it’s possible that he ends up being another misguided signing for Barcelona who is cut from the team right away, similar to what happened with Inigo Martinez and Marcos Alonso.
