Barcelona not ruling out contract termination of 28-year-old outcast with 15 international caps

During the summer transfer window, Barcelona may decide to sever the 28-year-old French defender Clement Lenglet’s contract due to his lack of play.
Clement Lenglet may become a free agent during the summer transfer window, per a report from Barca Universal. At FC Barcelona, the 15-cap French international is out of luck. And once his loan with Aston Villa finishes, the defending La Liga winners are considering ending his contract.

Clement Lenglet and his excursion along the difficult path
Over the past few years, Clement Lenglet has experienced a precipitous decline in popularity. When the 28-year-old left Sevilla for Barcelona in July 2018, he was among the top defenders in La Liga. It didn’t take him long to become a regular in the Catalan club’s starting lineup.

But Lenglet’s early Barcelona high quickly dissipated, and his reputation at Camp Nou slowly declined. By season’s end in 2021–2022, he had become a little part of the Blaugrana. Therefore, it should come as no surprise when Barcelona sent the Frenchman on loan to Tottenham Hotspur during the 2022 summer transfer window.

Lenglet had a respectable stint at Tottenham, but the North London team failed to finalize a permanent transfer in the previous summer. Rather, a second stint on loan in the Premier League was calling, as Aston Villa signed him for the 2023–2024 campaign. Nevertheless, under Unai Emery, the 15-time Les Bleus player from France has been in and out of the starting lineup.

Less than 2,000 minutes of playing time have been achieved by the 28-year-old Frenchman in 23 appearances across all competitions so far this season. Recent rumors, nevertheless, indicated that Clement Lenglet may yet be acquired permanently by Aston Villa. However, it doesn’t seem likely.

This summer, what takes place?
According to the most recent information, Aston Villa is not expected to finalize a permanent transfer for Lenglet. Barcelona is considering ending the contract of the 15-cap French international when his loan with Aston Villa concludes because of this, which does not sit well with the Blaugranas.

Thus, Lenglet’s situation has drastically changed from being the team’s first-choice center back to maybe becoming a free agent and departing. It will be fascinating to observe whether Barcelona uses contract termination as a way to address the Lenglet issue.
