FC Barcelona coach Xavi makes first ‘New signing’, reports SPORT

Head coach of FC Barcelona Xavi Hernandez made a move that SPORT, citing unnamed sources, said was the first “new signing” of his new administration.

Xavi declared back in January that he will leave his demanding position on June 30.

The club veteran, however, made a spectacular U-turn this week and opted to stay until the conclusion of his contract, which expires on the same day in 2025, at President Joan Laporta’s home on Wednesday night.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi insisted that three players join Barca or remain there in order for the team to succeed. However, the 44-year-old refuted this during a news conference on Thursday afternoon in Barcelona, when he and Laporta announced their decision to alter their minds.

In any case, with an eye on the upcoming season, Xavi and the board have already begun modifying the first team’s outlook.

SPORT claims that they have already finished working with Julio Tous, a strength and injury prevention specialist, who has been referred to as a “new signing.”

Xavi and Tous worked together during the manager’s playing days in the mid-2000s, and Tous is already regarded as a revolutionary in his area.

Along with Juventus and the Italian national side, he was a member of the group that managed Chelsea’s final Premier League victory under Antonio Conte in 2017.

Barca wants Tous to “optimise the performance of the players to the maximum” and “try to establish a structure based on proven professionals, internal and external,” according to SPORT.

With six games remaining in a season marred by injuries to important players like Gavi, Pedri, and Frenkie de Jong, among others, Tous’ efforts may hold the key to reviving Barca’s competitiveness both at home and abroad in Europe.

Barca currently appears certain to finish the season without a trophy after winning La Liga for the first time in four years in the spring of 2023. However, if Xavi had been able to depend on a healthy team for crucial matches and other crucial moments during the campaign, this might not have happened.
